The Nightingale Supper Club is a classic Door County Supper Club, loved by tourists and locals alike. Discover what makes the Nightingale such a special place, and decide if this is a good place for your next meal in Door County.
Menu
The Nightingale Supper Club offers on the whole a fairly typical Wisconsin Supper Club menu with an emphasis on steaks, fish, and chicken. All the customary sides at a supper club are available, like cole slaw, french fries, baked potato, etc.
However, the Nightingale also has a few surprises on the menu that you might not find at a typical supper club. Their bacon-wrapped scallops, for example, are a unique dish with interesting flavors, masterfully blending, salty, sweet, and savory sensations. These are a must-eat when you visit Nightingale.
Another highlight of the menu are some of the fish offerings. Walleye is a favorite kind of fish to eat in the Upper Midwest, and locally caught whitefish is a delicacy that you cannot get in most locales.
I gave the Nightingale Restaurant 4 stars for their menu. On the one hand, it is an expected menu with a few surprises for a Wisconsin Supper Club. On the other hand, some diners may want a little more variety with the menu offerings beyond the typical supper club fare.
Food Quality
Nightingale serves a limited, traditional supper club menu. But, the food they offer is extremely well-prepared. The ingredients are always fresh. Everything is cooked well. When you order a steak medium-rare at Nightingale, that is exactly what you get.
I gave Nightingale 5 stars for their food quality.
Service
Service is another place where Nightingale Supper Club excels. Many of the staff at Nightingale have been working there for decades. They know the menu, and they can help guide you to the best option for you. The waitstaff is attentive and friendly.
If you are looking for quick service, Nightingale Supper Club is not the place for you to eat. This goes along with their traditional supper club approach. Supper clubs don’t just expect you to linger. They want you to linger.
Ambiance
I love the ambiance of Nightingale Supper Club. It’s about as close to the classic Wisconsin supper club experience as you can get.
Nightingale has a large bar lounge area with comfortable bar stools and lower, cushy chairs around the bar. It’s decorated by an artistic sturgeon – former street art in downtown Sturgeon Bay. It also has pictures of Door County servicemen. It’s a great connection to the community. I also like the stained glass blocks in the windows. Make sure to come early to the Nightingale to spend some time in the bar lounge. It’s part of the experience.
The bar lounge has a classic red neon sign pointing the way to the dining room. It sounds tacky, but it’s not. It’s a cool, retro touch.
In the dining room, art and decor showcasing Sturgeon Bay’s maritime tradition will greet you. The tables have white, cloth tablecloths on them.
The entire restaurant has been recently renovated. Decor has been freshened up without removing the classic vintage vibe of the place.
Lighting is dark throughout Nightingale.
Nightingale is a pleasant place to linger for an evening. That’s why I gave it 5 stars for ambiance.
Location
When it comes to location, there are better spots than where Nightingale Supper Club is. When it was built, Nightingale was out in the country. But, now a modern commercial district has built up around it.
On the other hand, don’t let Nightingale’s less-than-ideal location deter you from eating there. Nightingale is about what’s inside – warm hospitality, good food, and a relaxing experience.
Summary: Nightingale Supper Club
All-in-all, I give Nightingale 4.4 stars as an average of its ratings for menu, food quality, ambiance, and location.
The Nightingale Supper Club offers a standard supper club menu (though with a few surprises!). The food is well-prepared and high quality. Service is always attentive, knowledgeable, and capable. It has a classic supper club ambiance, with low light, local flavor, and some retro flare. The location is not great, but you go for the people and experience inside the restaurant.
