Five Reasons to Visit El Salvador

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America and if you are planning to make a start on your adventures in travel this year, it should be on your list. While it isn’t always well-known as a place of beauty, El Salvador is packed with hidden gems that are worth adding to your bucket list.

From the stunning beaches to the tranquil waterfalls, El Salvador has it all – and more. Here are five reasons that you should consider El Salvador for your travel bucket list this year, whether you are starting out from Door County, Chicago, or anywhere else.

  1. The waterfalls. One of the most breathtaking wonders in El Salvador is the Tamanique Waterfalls El Salvador has to offer, located just outside Tamanique. These are perfect for both lovers of calm nature and adventure seekers! The hike isn’t too bad, taking you through lush forests as well as rocky terrains, allowing you to see the panoramic views. If you really do feel adventurous, dip in the pools at the base of the waterfalls and put that on your pinned list of things to do.
  2. The heritage. Did you know that El Salvador is a place with a rich cultural history? Most people don’t know how to point it out on a map, so knowing it’s a country that is home to several archaeological sites is a bonus. The ancient Mayan city of Joya de Cerén, is now a UNESCO Heritage site, offering a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of the Mayans from more than 1000 years ago.
  3. The beaches. Some of the best beaches in Central America are located here, but the fun part is that some of those beaches are black! Black sandy beaches are just as amazing to visit and are perfect for swimming, sunbathing and surfing. El Tunco is a small beach town popular among surfers with consistent waves and a laid-back vibe.
  4. The chance to hike. Did you know El Salvador is known to be the ‘Land of Volcanoes’? There are over 20 volcanoes here and there are plenty of hiking opportunities here, too. One of the most popular ones is at the Izalco Volcano, as it’s well known for its perfectly conical shape. There are opportunities to experience diverse flora and fauna here, making it perfect for nature enthusiasts.
  5. The amazing food. El Salvador is packed with incredible cuisines, flavourful cafes and street food options to die for. The tamales, yuca and pupusas – or stuffed corn tortillas – have to be tried and experienced. These thick tortillas are packed with cheese, beans and meat and are usually served with a side of tangy cabbage slaw. You can tour the coffee plantations and sample cups of delicious brews, too.

It may be a small country, but it’s brimming over with plenty of unforgettable experiences that you can tick off your bucket list. Relax, hike, take your tastebuds on a journey – there’s so much here and now that could change your life. El Salvador is somewhere that should be visited at least once in life!
